The Arenal area showcases some of our most scenic countryside and small towns. Only a two-hour drive from San Jose, small agriculture communities and cattle ranches cover rolling hills and deep valleys. Known as the heart of Costa Rica, you’ll find a strong cultural identity here.

Fortuna, situated at 253 meters above sea level, is made up of people with great spirit and business drive, who have converted a largely agricultural region into a booming commercial and tourism destination. The city features a lovely surrounding landscape, the most imposing features of which are the picture-perfect cones of Volcán Arenal.

Arenal Volcano is one of the world’s most spectacular volcanoes. In addition to huge ash columns and eruptions of glowing rock, the volcano occasionally sets off pyroclastic avalanches- a dramatic flow of fast moving hot gas and rock. Arenal has maintained constant activity since the time it re-awoke, after a span of nearly 400 years, with a huge eruption in 1968.

Curative mineral hot springs, hundreds of birds species at the Caño Negro National Park, La Fortuna Waterfall and it impressive surroundings will be de delight of those looking for the perfect encounter with “Mother Nature”.

Extreme adventure activities such canyoning, nature walks on the trails from where the volcano is the only witness and high suspension bridges through the forest, also make of this area a unique and definitely a must when visiting Costa Rica.

Due to the number of attractions and activities to enjoy in the area it is suggested to stay at least 2 nights in Arenal.

A wide variety of hotels going from budget to five stars properties are available, most of them with a volcano view and within a short distance from the volcano and the town of Fortuna.
